Lions Club of Damansara Kuala Lumpur officially launched its “Education & Welfare Fund” on Sunday, 5 December 2010 at HGH Convention Centre (SJKC Sentul KL). It was launched by our District Governor Dato’ Yeow Wah Chin.

The auspicious occasion was organized and served with Luncheon of 105 tables and attended by more than 1,000 guests that included eleven folks & orphanage homes, teachers & student from three primary schools (of which their selected students are recipients of our education fund), friends of Lions, our regular sponsors and others to this luncheon. Besides that there were also many great performances by volunteer individual and group performers from schools and organizations during the Luncheon that lasted from 11 am to 3pm.

During the Luncheon, the Organizing Chairperson Mr Tay Ah Kam thanked everyone who were present especially all regular sponsors and volunteer performers that made the Launching a very successful one. President of Lions Club of Damansara Kuala Lumpur Mr Tan Sooi Ann emphasized that the objective if the Launching was to create awareness among the general public on serving the needy community. It is our club’s hope that more people will join hands and provide support by spending time with the less fortunate and also financially. Any individual that is interested can always join us as sponsorship member from as low as RM100 per sponsorship member.

Lions Club of Damansara Kuala Lumpur had collected fund exceeding RM200,000.00 from the Luncheon. During the Luncheon we also took the opportunity to present donation to the following:

  1. LCI District “Lions Education Assistance for the Needy” project: RM75,000.00

  3. Three Chinese primary schools (SJKC Mun Yee, Setapak, SJKC Kheow Bin, Batu Caves & SJKC Desa Jaya, Kepong): Total RM22,000.00

  4. Eleven old folks & children homes: Total RM16,500.00

Total donations: RM143,500.00

“Education Fund” project is one of the many projects carried out by our club for the past few years. The objective is to assist students from lower income groups by providing some financial assistance during their preparation for school re-opening. We provide school bags, uniforms and cash to the selected deserving students. We also conduct eye-screening and give away free spectacles to the selected deserving students from lower income group.

Now our club has decided to enlarge the scope of this fund in order to benefit more people who are less fortunate and we also wish to re-name our fund to be called “Education & Welfare Fund“. The objective of the above luncheon function is to officially launch the new fund and kick-off an aggressive fund raising campaign for this project.

International Relationship - Built a centre for Jakarta down syndrome children (与印尼狮子会联办福利活动)

This was a joint project with our sister club – Lions club of Jakarta Mutiara Prima, Indonesia, to build a three storey school building named “Yayasan Kasih Bunda” for ninety disabled students who used to sit on the floor to study. The cost of building was >USD50,000. We had made four visits to Jakarta for the purpose of site visits/fund raising event/others. This project was reported in a few Indonesian local newspapers and other media.

Mobile Sight First (免费提供視力檢查、眼鏡给贫穷学生)
